Tree Trust Partners with Hawthorne Neighborhood to Green New Housing Sites
Tree Trust, Project for Pride in Living and the Hawthorne Area Community Council have been given a Home Depot grant through the City of Minneapolis to create a green low-income housing project that will be model for using best practices in integrating community based development, neighborhood revitalization and sustainable, green development. Through this process we will help transform a four block area in North Minneapolis, bounded by Lowry Avenue on the north, 4th Street on the east, 30th Avenue on the south, and Lyndale Avenue on the west, into a green healthy neighborhood, and we will provide the tools that will help to empower residents to help design, create and maintain the project. Tree Trust has identified the following goals for this project:
- Increase tree canopy
- Improve the existing forest
- Create landscaping & tree preservation standards
- Develop sustainable Green Team & neighborhood education campaign
- Increase the neighborhood's connection to outside funding and support
To accomplish these goals Tree Trust, working with out partners, will:
- Organize and facilitate a neighborhood Green Team to oversee the planning and project implementation
- Provide urban forestry technical assistance to inventory trees and other vegetation in the area and develop a sustainable landscape design
- Carry out a public information and education program to inform residents of the care and benefits of the green landscape of the community.
