Bringing trees to the concrete jungle

With the continued support of Centerpoint Energy, Tree Trust was able to bring our Learning with Trees program to the heart of the Uptown area of Minneapolis during the 2008-2009 school year.

Jefferson Community School, a kindergarten through 8th grade school in Minneapolis, was selected to participate in the Learning with Trees program last school year.

Committed members of the community and teaching staff embraced the program by joining Jefferson's Green Team.

Spring arrived just in time this year, as May 1 was a perfect day for planting in Uptown. Jefferson students planted 16 trees and 23 shrubs throughout their campus with the help of Master Gardeners and interested community volunteers. While little seemed more exciting than the worms the students unearthed while planting their trees, the enthusiasm the students displayed for planting became contagious as the day went on!

At the end of the planting day, Principal Ray Aponte gathered the entire school together on the playground to thank the students for their efforts and to celebrate their newly renovated outdoor spaces. Members of the student council held signs along Hennepin Avenue which read, "Honk if you love trees." After a long day of planting, watering and mulching, the students of Jefferson Community School were rewarded for their hard work with ice cream and a true sense of accomplishment.

Thank you Jefferson for your commitment and dedication!
